What We Do

Learning Right Relations (LRR) began in 2015 as a series of adult ed classes called “Gatherings”, auxiliary meetings and visits to Tribal sites aimed at addressing the historic marginalization and inconcievable and ongoing inequities experienced by our Coast Salish Native neighbors.

Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery -

On Thursday March 28, 2023 the sitting pope of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis II? essentially ‘rescinded’ the Papal Bulls of 1452 (Dom Diversas*) , 1493 (blah blah) et al., known to theologians and historians as the “Doctrine of Discovery” or as the docterine of domination over the original, free and independent Peoples and Nations.

*Dum Diversas is the papal bull issued on 18 June 1452 by Pope Nicholas V. It authorized Afonso V of Portugal to conquer Saracens and pagans and consign them to "perpetual servitude." (specific to the African continent)

LRR continues to respond to the NABS Coalition’s 7 Weeks of Action for 7 Generations. Two book groups are active, :

1. Talking with the editor(s) and contributors to We Are the Middle of Forever, editors: Stan Rushworth and Dahr Jamail; current read is The Dawn of Everything, 2022, David and David. Their research lifts in to the light the historic dawning of a lived humanitarian culture across Turtle Island - before Europeans experienced this manor of living. See the Middle of Forever book group page. where you find In the 16th century French Jesuit students and elders kept many records documenting that Native people were mutually supportive, had respect for each other’s life paths, served as Anties and Uncles with their kin and clan, and recognized that each person was in sacred right relations with a living mother earth. This book speaks to the truths about the integrity of Indians as kin to all living things. Put the evening of January X, 2023 on your calendar when the book will be the subject of an online gathering where highlights are shared in unique ways.

2. Indian Boarding Schools, Learning more fully on several pathways, including a read of Educating for Extinction, David Wallace Adams’ second edition. This group gathers monthly or more frequently to support the NABS Coalition work to pass the Truth and Healing Commission Policy Act. See more on the Indian Boarding School resource page.

LRR Gatherings typically feature a presentation by an American Indian presenter and have covered a wide range of topics. Participants also share in a potluck meal, to strengthen community and relationships.
