The Indians of the Medicine Creek Treaty, their Coast Salish neighbors and all Indians living in our region experience respect, honor and support for their way of life.
We walk a path of learning and living to address the historic marginalization and ongoing inequities experienced by our Coast Salish neighbors, and we share the responsibility to care for this place, their homelands, where we mutually abide.
Following and supporting the sovereignty rights of original, free and independant Nations and Peoples takes time and a willingness to question our own perceptions - sometimes born of an upbringing in the colonial practices of these United States. We respectfully listen and learn directly from Native voices by visiting their regional and national sources, and from area Tribes.
It was ten years ago in October of 2025 that Bernie Steckler led the a group of about a dozen UUs who met to become more involved in cultural exchanges, led significantly by Native neighbors on whose ancestral lands many more non-native people reside.
Ten Years ago, Hanford McCloud, skipper/leader of the Nisqually Canoe Family invited LRR to get involved. The 2016 Paddle to Nisqually was where many volunteers through our informal group volunteered to prepare for and assist through five days of “Protocol” on the Green Team, or kitchen/dining area cleanup, or on some cooking.
Everyone is invited to the 2026 Paddle to Nisqually orientation for those who would like to volunteer.
Other gatherings feature native led presentations, auxiliary meetings and visits to Tribal sites aimed at addressing the historic marginalization and ongoing inequities faced by our Coast Salish neighbors. Learning Right Relations has become an action group that meets monthly and is involved year-round in activities that support the following the vision and statement of purpose.
